“We are in love with black pine tar”

Bornstein Lyckefors is an architecture firm in Gothenburg that works with both public and private buildings, villas and interior architecture.

They describe themselves as being “material lovers” and work with ambitious architecture. Johan and Andreas of Bornstein Lyckefors are the architects who think that pine tar deserves more attention. – We fell in love with black pine tar and will definitely use it more, says Johan Olsson.

Even black pine tar painted roofs
It was when working on a modern house of 260 square metres in Mölndal that Bornstein Lyckefors became aware of black pine tar. They were looking for a paint that really could stand up to the elements – not least because even the roof would be painted.

– We were also struck by the incredibly beautiful colour that highlighted the texture of the wood. For those of us who care about the materials we use, it also feels good to use nature’s own paint, says Johan, who managed the house project.

Abstract and playful
The architectural style is abstract and playful, and the end result was a real dream house for Farshad, Arlena and their two children. Its height and the roof angle of 45 degrees means that the house really stands out in the residential neighbourhood with lots of older houses. Inside, the house has unique features such as a straight staircase of perforated sheet metal and a special solution that magically hides away the TV in the living room.

– Farshad and Arlena were really open to new solutions when we designed the house. Creating a house that is painted completely with black pine tar is in itself quite unique. We have heard only positive remarks about the colour and everyone thinks the facade has lovely texture and lustre, says Johan.
