An Attefall house in Vallda

The Jewert family lives in Vallda, in a modern, so-called Halland house painted with Red Pine Tar from Auson. Recently they have added smaller house in their garden. Again choosing a pine tar paint felt only natural. This time, they went for Pine Tar Vitriol, which has a gray hue. Anna Jewert tells the story of how they once fell for pine tar paint:

The reason we decided to change to pine tar paint was that we originally chose traditional Falu Red distemper paint for our newly built house some twenty years ago. We soon discovered it didn’t match our expectations. We live in the countryside outside Kungsbacka, and besides beautiful greenery there’s a pretty rough climate from time to time, with harsh winds from the west and a lot of precipitation. We got microbial growth, as in black mold, in certain points of the compass. In addition, the red distemper paint simply came off and did not live up to the quality we had hoped for. A hundred years ago, this was still a quality paint. Not so much these days.

We did our research online to find alternatives, and became curious about pine tar paint. Said and done, we decided to move along with a cleaning of the facade and then a full-scale repainting of our big house.

In 2021 we started building a so-called Attefall house, which means a small house built for guests or tenants, in our garden. It felt only natural to to go with the same type of pine tar paint, only this time in a different hue. We decided on Pine Tar Vitriol, which is a grey paint.

We primed all of the boards before building the house. Then we gave them all an extra layer once everything was in place.

In addition to being very beautiful, the smell of pine tar paint is also fantastic! The scent remains for a while after painting and then gradually disappears.

Our expectation now is that our houses will be properly protected in a natural way, and that we won’t have to repaint as often as we had to with the distemper paint.
