Barn House in Pine Tar Vitriol
Welcome to the Luhrsjö barn house – a residence close to nature, with a view of the lake as well as the woods and green pastures. The barn house with its wooden cladding painted with pine tar vitriol is a Fiskarheden Villa, inspired by a house type known as Glimre.
Large window sections make sure nature is always present, and soft, earthy colours to match the pine tar vitriol of the facade dominate indoors as well. The motto for the whole house project has been to create a timeless home with wise, sustainable choices to live with for a long time.
What about the pine tar vitriol made you feel good?
That it’s a natural product felt important to us, but also its aesthetics. We found all we wanted in one single product.
How did you stumble upon pine tar vitriol?
It was a day in February, and we were out walking to watch facades. The one we had in mind didn’t live up to our expectations, but in the same area we found a house that attracted our interest. It had the exact hue we were looking for! The family were out in their garden, so we could ask them what paint they had used. Pine tar vitriol, was the answer the helpful house owners gave us. It was a done deal, there and then. We had read about this paint before, but actually seeing it made all the difference.
How much time did you spend painting?
We painted twice. First, we painted all of the wood once, before putting it up. It was summer and the weather was nice, so we could work outside and just paint board after board. Then we let it dry in a well-ventilated barn.
The cladding, grooved fir tree boarding in three different widths, was put up during the fall. The next summer we painted everything ourselves once again, and again it all went smoothly.
What comments have you been getting about the house?
The location – and the apparent interaction between the indoors and outdoors is attractive to many. It’s what we like the most, too. It’s easy to feel good here.
What are you the most happy with?
How nicely the colour interacts with the surrounding nature. The pine tar vitriol has the same, vivid hue as the trees around the house.
Three arguments for painting with pine tar vitriol?
It’s a natural product that also protects the wood, it’s easy to use, and it won’t need much maintenance in the future.
